Project Coordinator

University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG), Department of Health Sciences

The mission of the Department of Health Sciences of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is to promote health and participation opportunities for people during their entire life course and to optimize healthcare in close collaboration with professional practice. Core areas of work include preventing disease, dealing with the consequences of illness and promoting the participation of ill people in society and work settings. We carry out scientific research, academic and post-academic teaching and patient care. The department aims to fulfil its duties to a high standard ā€“ and successfully so. Both the research and the teaching have recently been assessed as very good to excellent.

The Department of Health Sciences consists of the Public Health and Health Psychology Sections as well as the unit of Applied Healthcare Research and the Science Shop. It has about 120 employees, mostly researchers. In the department a wide range of public health topics get attention, ranging from youth health care, health promotion, occupational health to health care for the ageing population.

Healthy Ageing is the strategic focus of the University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).  Healthy ageing is a lifelong process that starts before conception, with parents who pass on their genes and with them the risks and opportunities for a healthy life course, or the occurrence of illness later in life. Lifestyle, food patterns and environmental factors influence the development of health. However, new knowledge is required about the influence of these factors, and how they interact with one another.

Research into ageing calls for a multidisciplinary approach. In Groningen Healthy Ageing is seen as a joint research challenge for the UMCG, the University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, and various regional, national and international partners.

The multidisciplinary research ranges from fundamental biological and (pre)clinical research through to applied research into social-societal effects of disease and health. In this way results can be translated rapidly into adequate and/or improved prevention and treatment methods. This in turn leads to new products in the field of medication and medical technology for making diagnoses, and for example for the development of new nutritional products ā€“ another aspect in which this research is of vital importance.
